Zambry: Reps who won marginally willing to give way - Malaysiakini

A few Perak elected representatives who have served for more than three terms and won their respective seats with only a slim majority in the last general election have expressed their intentions not to contest in the coming 13th general election.

Perak Menteri Besar Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, who is also the state Umno liaison committee chairman, said the affected representatives had met him to express their intention to give way to other candidates.

"They also realise that if they are to stay one, the process in ensuring continuity in the government and party leadership will not happen," he told reporters after opening the 57th annual general meeting of the Peninsula Malay Students Federation (GPMS) today.

However, he declined to say how many of the affected elected representatives had met him.

He was asked to comment whether elected representatives who won their seats with a slim majority and had served for more than three terms should give way to the young generation.

When asked for how long should one remain as an elected representative, Zambry said it depended on the people's acceptance of his or her service.

"Normally, we know when to leave. There are some who give good service, their constituents want them to stay, but there are also many who want those who have served for a long time to give way for the new generation," he added.

Did they back out?

On a newspaper report that three elected representatives in Perak withdrew their intention to back out from contesting in the coming 13th general election, Zambry said the representatives concerned only said that they would consider if they were asked to contest again.

"That was what they said, but even if they are not named the candidates, they will remain loyal to the party and ensure the Barisan Nasional candidate will win the seat in their respective constituencies," he added.

The elected representatives are Pengkalan Baharu assemblyman Hamidi Abu Bakar, Lintang assemblyman Ahamad Fakeh Adam and Belanja assemblyman Mohd Zaim Abu Hassan.

In another development, Zambry hoped that the Malay non-governmental organisations would not be looked upon as a racist movement.

In the case of GPMS, he said, its main focus was to provide education and knowledge to the Malays, especially in the rural areas.
