Palanivel: Indian support for Barisan going up - NST

GEORGE TOWN: MIC would record a better performance in the next general election than in 2008 as there is an increase in support from the Indian community for Barisan Nasional.

Party president Datuk G. Palanivel said this was not only evident in Penang but all over the country.

"Yesterday (Saturday), I was in Ijok, Rawang and Gombak Setia, and I could see a marked increase in the support shown by the community."

Palanivel said he was confident that MIC would be able to win back some of the parliamentary and state seats which it lost in 2008.

In the 2008 general election, MIC won three out of the nine parliamentary seats it contested and seven out of 19 state seats.

However, in the Hulu Selangor by-election in April last year, the BN component party recaptured the parliamentary seat which it lost to Parti Keadilan Rakyat.

"We will do better this time around. I have no doubt about it. I would not say I am very confident, as we will still have to work hard. The public needs a lot of convincing.

"BN has changed a lot. There is a new style of governance. The prime minister (Datuk Seri Najib Razak) is now more popular. I am sure there will be a good turnaround (in the next election)," he said after presenting prizes for the Indian Association of Penang's 12th Tri-Languages Competition at Universiti Sains Malaysia yesterday.

About 200 students from 28 Tamil schools in Penang participated in the competition, which included speeches, storytelling, essay-writing and singing motivational songs.

Also present were state MIC chairman Datuk P.K. Subbaiyah, state MIC Youth chief J. Dhinagaran, Indian Association of Penang president Ananda Krishnan Naidu and organising committee chairman N.G. Ganapathy.

On another matter, Palanivel said there had been numerous complaints on promises not being fulfilled by the DAP-led state government.

"It is BN that has been pumping in the money to improve the financial standing of Indians here in Penang."
