MIC to remain a community party, says Palanivel - The Star

Sunday Dec 11, 2011

PETALING JAYA: The MIC will remain an Indian-based party unless inter-marriages change the equation.

“Then, anything is possible,” said party president Datuk G. Palanivel.

He said the MIC was a community party and would stay as such.

“But, in the future, I don't know. The equation might change,” he said here yesterday.

Palanivel was responding to a report in a Tamil daily that quoted his deputy Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam as saying the MIC was ready to evolve from being an Indian-centric party to one that is multi-ethnic.

Taking Umno as an example, Palanivel said it will not open its doors to other races.

Meanwhile, at a function in Kota Damansara on Friday, Palanivel, who is Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said he would contest in the next general election.

At the function, Palanivel handed out RM740,000 to 23 temples and RM81,000 to nine NGOs in Selangor.

He will be handing out funds from the Implementation and Coordination Unit totalling RM2.57mil to 81 temples and RM200,000 to 23 NGOs nationwide.
