Only a word of support given to school authorities - The Star

THE Ipoh City Council did not promise a plot of land in Ampang for the relocation of SJK(T) Gunung Rapat as claimed by the Opposition, said Datuk S. Veerasingam.

He said Datuk Bandar Datuk Roshidi Hashim had merely told the school authorities that he would put a word of support for their application for the land to the state executive council.

Veerasingam, who is Perak Mentri Besar’s special adviser, revealed that the Ampang land was one of three plots listed by the school in a memorandum to the Mentri Besar in May last year.

“Nothing has been finalised yet. The state government knows that the school desperately needs land, but we need to evaluate all the options and decide on the best location for the school,” he said in a press conference to respond to allegations by state DAP deputy chief V. Sivakumar.

Sivakumar had said that Roshidi had tricked the Indian community by giving away the land initially promised to the school last year to the Perak Football Association (PAFA).

According to a Malay daily on Feb 12, PAFA president Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharudin confirmed that the association had applied for the land but had not received any reply from the authorities yet.

Veerasingam also slammed the Opposition for failing to help the school during its 11-month stint as the state government.

“They are turning this into a political matter when all Barisan Nasional wants to do is to help the teachers and students who are suffering in a cramped condition,” he said.

During his press conference last Saturday Sivakumar had showed media representatives a copy of a letter from Roshidi to Veerasingam stating that the 0.97ha land was given to PAFA.

“Last October during his visit to the school, the Datuk Bandar had promised that the land owned by MBI would be allocated to the school.

“Even the Deputy Prime Minister promised to give the school RM2.5mil for its development project during his Deepavali visit to Perak,” Sivakumar had said.

He did not accept MBI’s claims that it learnt the land was given to PAFA only after the school visit on Oct 19.

Sivakumar had also said that the school had applied for a land three times and that there was no other suitable land in the area for it to move to.

State Opposition chief Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin who was present at the same press conference said: “There are 300 students and teachers suffering due to lack of infrastructure at their current location, yet the Datuk Bandar has betrayed the Indian community by going back on his promise.”

On Sunday, Sivakumar accompanied Persatuan Dravidian Malaysia representatives to lodge a police report against the Datuk Bandar over the land issue.

Sungai Siput MIC wants Palanivel to contest seat - Malaysiakini

The MIC Sungai Siput division today expressed support for party president G Palanivel or any candidate of his choice to be fielded in the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat in Perak in the next general election.

Its chairperson, R Ganesan, said the party would work hard for the Barisan Nasional (BN) to recapture the seat. The MP now is Dr D Jeyakumar of PSM who beat incumbent S Samy Vellu, the former MIC president, in the 2008 general election.

“We welcome Datuk Seri (Palanivel) to contest the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat in the 13th general election. This is a historic seat for the MIC. Our priority is for the president (to contest). If he selects someone else, we will accept the decision and work hard to ensure the candidate’s victory,” he told reporters in Ipoh.

Ganesan said the agreement for Palanivel to contest in Sungai Siput was not only a unanimous decision of the MIC but had the agreement of Umno, MCA, Gerakan and PPP as well as the support of IPF and Makkal Sakthi.

He hit out at a statement issued by former Sungai Siput MIC Youth head K Manimaran in a Tamil newspaper today that the seat should be handed over to Umno.

Umno had not asked for the seat, and neither has any other BN component party, he said, adding that such a statement can undermine harmony within the BN.

Palanivel recently took over the post of Perak MIC chairpeson from S Veerasingam, which is seen as a positive move to bolster the MIC’s position in facing the next general election.

He also said that as at September last year, Sungai Siput had 11,066 Indian voters and MIC now had 7,500 members in the area.

Ganesan said the MIC Sungai Siput division had applied to open 23 new branches, and added that this indicated the growing Indian support for the party and the BN.

Villagers to have a road link to Kamunting soon - The Star

VILLAGERS of Anak Kurau in Kuala Kurau near Kamunting are inching closer to their dream of having a road linking their village to Kamunting.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir who performed the ground-breaking ceremony for a 11.5km-long road costing RM75mil on Monday, said villagers had been asking for the project for over 30 years.

“With this road, travelling time will be reduced by half from the 30 minutes currently taken when travelling on the old stretch,” he told reporters.

Great start: Dr Zambry (at the driver’s seat) during the ground breaking ceremony.

The project, he added, would be carried out in two phases.

“Phase One, which is 2.5km, cost RM8.5mil and is scheduled for completion next year,” he said.

Earlier, Batu Kurau assemblyman Kapt (Rtd) Datuk Mohd Najmuddin Elias Al-Hafiz, who was also present, said it was a dream come true for villagers to finally have the road.

“Since I was elected the assemblyman here, I will raise the matter without fail during each assembly sitting,” he said.

Warm welcome: Dr Zambry greeting Anak Kurau villagers during his visit to the village.

He added that the spill over effect from the project would be huge as there are several pristine rivers along the route, which could be turned into tourist destinations.

Earlier in his speech, Dr Zambry described the ground-breaking ceremony as historic.

“The project has been around since Anak Kurau was under the Kamunting state constituency until today it was put under the Batu Kurau constituency,” he said.

He brought further cheer to the villagers when he announced several allocations for the village.

Besides the RM130,000 to repair the village drains, Dr Zambry also approved RM70,000 to build a religious school.

Zambry: Perak BN to launch GE13 manifesto soon - Bernama

Feb 7, 2012

Perak Barisan Nasional (BN) will launch its manifesto for the 13th general election soon, after it has been fine-tuned, said its chairperson Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.

He said the manifesto, agreed upon by all the state BN leaders, was completed at the end of last year and was being modified and improved further.

“As the date of the coming 13th general election has not been announced yet, the committee felt the manifesto could be fine-tuned,” he said after attending a Thaipusam celebration of the Hindu community in Ipoh in Gunung Cheroh today.

He said the election manifesto was based on the overall aspirations of the BN component parties in the state - Umno, MCA, MIC, Gerakan and the People’s Progressive Party.

Zambry, who is also the Menteri Besar, said Perak BN hoped the manifesto could win the hearts of the people to vote for BN in the coming elections.

‘Trust me,’ Najib tells Indian community - The Malaysian Insider

By Melissa Chi February 07, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR:

Datuk Seri Najib Razak today urged Indian Malaysians to “trust” him to improve their lives ahead of the 13th general election.

“If you help me, I can help you. You trust me, I trust you,” the prime minister told a huge crowd of Hindu devotees attending the Thaipusam festival at the Batu Caves temple here.

The prime minister also announced that RM2 million will be allocated to build a cultural centre at the temple grounds.

“To show the government’s sincerity, I would like to announce that RM2 million will be allocated to build a cultural centre,” he said to a cheering crowd.

The Lord Muruga temple at Batu Caves draws thousands of devotees and onlookers during Thaipusam annually.

Also present were MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel, Najib’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and former MIC president and Special Envoy (Infrastructure) to India and South Asia Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

“To see the transformation happen, to become a developed country, a high-income nation we need a partnership and that partnership that we need is between the Indian community and the government,” he said, using Indian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Mynadi and the Sri Murugan Centre as examples.

“And this partnership, ladies and gentlemen, must be based on the philosophy of nambikei (Tamil for trust). If you have nambikei, then there would be no problems,” the PM said.

He pointed out that RM3.6 million was allocated two years ago to beautify and improve the facilities at Batu Caves, making it a popular tourist destination.

He also said a RM4 million project for a new building for SRJK Batu Caves has since been completed.

Najib, who is also Umno president, said his Barisan Nasional (BN) government will fulfil all its promises to the people.

“As a government, we do not break promises. If we promise to do something, the Barisan Nasional government will fulfil all of our promises, whether to the Indian community or to other races, I guarantee that every promise will be delivered.

“I stand in front of the Indian community today and I can confidently say that for the past three years our efforts to help the Indian community in every aspect have been positive because our efforts have been the greatest from us,” Najib said.

Indian Malaysians constitute about eight per cent of this multiracial, multicultural country’s 28 million population.

The prime minister is widely expected to call for elections this year even though the BN’s mandate only expires in April next year.

MIC Youth secretary reinstated - The Star

Thursday February 2, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR: Former MIC Youth secretary C. Sivarraajh, who has completed his four-month suspension from the party, has been reinstated to his previous post.

MIC Youth chief T. Mohan announced the decision at the national youth council meeting on Monday.

“The apppointment is made in consultation with president Datuk G. Palanivel,” he said, adding that interim secretary P. Punithan had been appointed executive secretary.

Sivarraajh was initially suspended for a year from Aug 17 for alleging that the party had acted against MIC’s constitution by readmitting sacked members.

However, following an appeal by Sivarraajh as well as a leniency letter from Mohan, the party’s central working committee (CWC) reduced the suspension to Dec 31 last year.

Action was taken against Sivarraajh for lodging a report with the Registrar of Societies last April on the admission of the members, including three who were sacked for launching a movement to oust then president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

The three who were sacked are CWC members K.P. Samy, G. Kumar Amaan and deputy Youth leader V. Mugilan.

Sivarraajh thanked Palanivel and Mohan for the reappointment, saying it would spur him to work harder for the party.

Earlier, Mohan urged the Youth leaders to work harder to woo young voters as the general election was approaching.

“We have strategies and programmes planned to engage the youths,” he said.

Palanivel: MIC will not give up Sg Siput seat - The Star

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC will not give up the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat, a constituency the party has contested in since the first general election, said president Datuk G. Palanivel.

He said there was no truth to reports that MIC would exchange the parliamentary seat with Gerakan.

“We will not switch Sungai Siput,” Palanivel said in response to a vernacular newspaper report that many branch leaders were shocked to learn that the party leadership was planning to swap the seat, which has traditionally been contested by MIC presidents until 2008.

The late Tun V. T. Sambanthan held the seat from 1955 to 1974 while Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu defended the seat for eight consecutive terms until he was defeated in 2008 by Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s Dr Michael Jeyakumar.

Both Sambanthan and Samy Vellu were MIC presidents as well as Cabinet ministers.

It is rumoured that state assembly speaker Datuk R. Ganesan and Samy Vellu’s son, S. Vell Paari, were in the running for the Sungai Siput seat.

Ganesan, who was dropped as the candidate for the Sungkai state seat in the 2008 election, has thrown his weight behind Palanivel who took over as president in December 2010.

It is an open secret that he has lobbied for the seat.

Vell Paari has been frequenting the constituency and has already held meetings with several non-governmental organisations and grassroots leaders.
